Tohoku Travel – Shinjo Matsuri – A Magnificent Festival

The Shinjo Matsuri is one of the most spectacular traditional festivals in Tohoku, Japan, held every year on August 24, 25, and 26 in Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture. With a history of over 270 years, this festival is a vibrant blend of tradition, artistry, and community spirit.

The festival originated in 1756, when local lord Tozawa Masanobu organized a new celebration at Tenmangu Shrine to encourage his people after a year of severe famine and to pray for a good harvest. Since then, the event has grown into a cultural highlight of Tohoku, beloved by locals and travelers alike.

The most breathtaking feature of Shinjo Matsuri is its 20 magnificent “Yatai” floats (festival floats), adorned with elaborate decorations inspired by historical tales and kabuki plays. These floats parade through the streets during the Yoi Matsuri (Evening Parade) and the Hon Matsuri (Main Parade), accompanied by lively festival music.

For three unforgettable days, the sound of drums and flutes fills the city, the streets come alive with excitement, and the spirit of tradition shines brightly. Recognized as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan, the Shinjo Matsuri is a must-see event for anyone exploring Tohoku travel and culture.

✨ If you are planning a summer trip to Japan, don’t miss the chance to experience the Shinjo Festival—a true celebration of history, artistry, and community in the heart of Tohoku.
