Fukushima Travel – Kabuki in Hinoemata

On September 6, 2025, the village of Hinoemata in Fukushima Prefecture, Tohoku hosted the 40th Hinoemata Kabuki performance, marking a special milestone. For the very first time, this traditional play was performed during the daytime, offering a new way to experience a centuries-old art form that has been carefully preserved in Japan’s mountain villages.

Hinoemata Kabuki is one of the most unique forms of local Kabuki theater in Japan. Unlike the grand Kabuki stages of Tokyo or Kyoto, this rural performance has been nurtured by the villagers of Hinoemata for generations. With a history said to date back over 270 years, the plays are performed on a charming outdoor stage, surrounded by nature, creating a truly atmospheric experience.

This is not an everyday event—Hinoemata Kabuki is performed only three times a year. Each performance is a rare opportunity to witness Japan’s living cultural heritage, passed down with pride and dedication. Visitors can feel the deep connection between the performers, the audience, and the community, all gathered together in this remote mountain village to celebrate tradition.

For those interested in Japanese culture, history, and performing arts, attending Hinoemata Kabuki is an unforgettable highlight of any Tohoku travel itinerary. It is not just theater—it is a window into the enduring spirit of Fukushima’s mountain communities, where history and tradition continue to thrive.

✨ When planning your trip to Japan, don’t miss the chance to experience this extraordinary festival of culture deep in the mountains of Fukushima.
