Fukushima Travel – Aizu Festival

From September 19 to 21, 2025, the historic city of Aizu-Wakamatsu in Fukushima Prefecture came alive with the annual Aizu Festival (Aizu Matsuri), one of the most celebrated autumn festivals in the Tohoku region of Japan. With roots tracing back to the Edo period, this festival honors the proud samurai heritage of the Aizu Clan and celebrates the spirit of the community with ceremonies, performances, and vibrant parades.

The highlight of the festival took place on September 20, when the grand Aizu Clan Procession (Aizu Han-ko Gyoretsu) marched through the streets of Aizu-Wakamatsu. This spectacular samurai parade featured over 500 participants dressed in historical costumes, including samurai warriors in armor, lords, ladies, and attendants. The event recreated the grandeur of the Aizu Clan’s feudal past, with banners, music, and rituals that transported visitors back to the days when Aizu flourished as a powerful samurai domain. In 2025, the procession was made even more special by the participation of a special guest of honor, drawing thousands of spectators from across Japan and abroad.

Beyond the procession, the Aizu Festival also celebrates the region’s deep historical ties. Tsuruga Castle, the iconic symbol of Aizu, serves as a backdrop to many of the events, reminding visitors of the bravery and sacrifice of the Byakkotai (White Tiger Corps), young samurai who became legendary figures during the Boshin War in the 19th century. Their story, intertwined with the festival, makes this event not only a celebration but also a poignant commemoration of samurai loyalty and honor.

Throughout the three days, the city hosted a variety of cultural performances, Shinto rituals, local food stalls, and traditional entertainment, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. For travelers interested in Japanese history, samurai culture, and autumn festivals in Tohoku, the Aizu Festival offers a truly immersive experience.
