Autumn

Fukushima Travel – Stunning Autumn Colors of the Bandai Azuma Skyline

Hidden in the mountains of Fukushima Prefecture lies one of Japan’s most spectacular scenic drives — the Bandai Azuma Skyline. Stretching 29 kilometers through the Azuma mountain range, this high-altitude road has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Roads for its breathtaking views, seasonal beauty, and sense of freedom that only a mountain drive can offer.

A Road Painted in Autumn Colors

From early to late October, the entire Bandai Azuma Skyline is wrapped in brilliant hues of red, gold, and orange. As you ascend from the foothills, the colors shift with the altitude — fiery maples give way to golden birches and deep green pines. The fresh mountain air and crisp light make it a perfect setting for photography and relaxation.

One of the highlights along the route is Tsubakuro Valley, where the Fudō Bridge gracefully spans a dramatic gorge. From the bridge, you can look down into a valley glowing with autumn leaves — a view often featured in travel magazines as one of Tohoku’s most beautiful fall landscapes.

Must-See Spots Along the Skyline

At the center of the route lies Jōdodaira Plateau (浄土平), a volcanic highland located about 1,600 meters above sea level. From here, you can enjoy a short hike up Mt. Azuma-Kofuji (吾妻小富士), a perfectly shaped mini volcano with a panoramic crater view. During autumn, the entire area is surrounded by a sea of red and yellow leaves, creating a stunning contrast with the gray volcanic terrain.

On a clear day, the summit offers spectacular views of the Bandai Azuma mountain range, Fukushima City, and even distant peaks like Mt. Bandai. This is one of the few places in Japan where you can enjoy both volcanic landscapes and colorful forests in a single view.

Access and Travel Tips

🚗 By Car:

The Bandai Azuma Skyline is easily accessible by car from Fukushima City. The entrance to the Skyline is about a 30-minute drive from the city center. A toll is no longer required, and there are several parking areas along the route for scenic stops and photography.

🚌 By Public Transport:

Public transportation options are limited, especially during the autumn season. The best way to fully enjoy the Skyline and nearby attractions like Jōdodaira and Mt. Azuma-Kofuji is to travel by car or book a guided tour.

🌅 Best Time to Visit:

The peak autumn season typically runs from mid to late October, depending on weather conditions. Early mornings and weekdays are the best times to avoid crowds and enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere.

After Your Drive

If time allows, stop by the nearby Tsuchiyu Onsen area, known for its relaxing hot springs and traditional crafts such as wooden spinning tops (Tsuchiyu kokeshi). After a day surrounded by nature’s colors, a soak in a local onsen is the perfect way to end your journey.
