Fukushima Travel – Motomiya Autumn Festival

From October 24 to 26, 2025, the city of Motomiya in Fukushima Prefecture came alive with one of its most cherished annual events — the Motomiya Autumn Festival (Motomiya Aki Matsuri). This traditional festival, centered around the Adatara Shrine, is a vibrant celebration of community spirit, history, and gratitude for the autumn harvest.

A Glowing Start Beneath the Autumn Sky

The festival began on the evening of October 24 with a magnificent Lantern Lighting Ceremony in front of Adatara Shrine. As dusk fell, countless paper lanterns were lit one by one, illuminating the streets of Motomiya with a warm, golden glow. The flickering lights floating beneath the crisp autumn sky created an enchanting, dreamlike scene that marked the beginning of three days of festivity.

Local participants dressed in traditional happi coats carried portable lanterns, while the rhythmic sounds of taiko drums and festival chants filled the air. The moment when all the lanterns were lit was breathtaking — a symbol of unity and hope, connecting the townspeople through light and tradition.

A Festival Rich in Culture and Community

Over the following days, festival-goers enjoyed a variety of traditional events, food stalls, and performances. The streets were lined with visitors, and the joyful atmosphere reflected the deep bond between Motomiya’s people and their cultural heritage. The Adatara Shrine, standing proudly at the heart of the city, served as a sacred backdrop to the festivities, linking the modern celebration to centuries of Shinto tradition.
