Autumn

Fukushima Travel – Bandaisan Gold Line

The Bandaisan Gold Line in Fukushima Prefecture is one of Japan’s most breathtaking scenic drive routes—and in late October, it truly lives up to its name. As the mountains blaze with brilliant shades of gold, amber, and crimson, the entire roadway becomes wrapped in shimmering autumn color. For travelers exploring the Bandai Highlands, this route offers one of the most unforgettable seasonal experiences.

A Road Painted in Autumn Gold

During the peak foliage season, the forests surrounding the Bandaisan Gold Line glow with vivid golden hues. The contrast between the radiant autumn leaves, volcanic cliffs, and crisp blue sky creates a dramatic, photogenic landscape at every turn. Driving through the highlands feels like passing through a living tunnel of autumn light.

Scenic Highlights Along the Route

The Bandaisan Gold Line features several must-see points, including:

• “Maboroshi no Taki” (the Phantom Waterfall) — A waterfall that appears only under certain conditions. Spotting this elusive cascade during autumn feels especially magical.

• Nametaki Waterfall — A graceful sliding waterfall flowing across smooth rock, beautifully framed by fiery seasonal foliage.

• Panoramic Views of Lake Inawashiro — From elevated viewpoints, you can gaze down at Japan’s fourth-largest lake shining blue beneath the autumn mountains.

Stay Safe in Nature

While exploring the viewpoints and small trails along the Bandaisan Gold Line, visitors should stay alert for local wildlife—especially bears, which occasionally appear in the region. Following posted guidance and staying aware of your surroundings is essential.

Seasonal Closure Information

Due to high elevation and heavy snow, the Bandaisan Gold Line closes each winter.

In 2025, the road officially closed for the season on November 14 at sunset.

Whether you are photographing the landscapes, enjoying a leisurely drive, or visiting the waterfalls and panoramic lookouts, the Bandaisan Gold Line offers one of the most spectacular autumn scenes in all of Fukushima.
