Spring

Fukushima Travel – Plum Blossoms at Senshoji Temple

The plum blossoms are now at their peak at Senshoji Temple in Iwaki. Known locally as the “Temple of Plum Blossoms,” this historic temple becomes a beautiful spring destination when its plum trees begin to bloom.

Within the temple grounds, around 500 plum trees burst into color each year. Both red and white plum blossoms create a stunning natural tapestry, filling the air with the gentle fragrance that signals the arrival of spring in Fukushima.

Special Night Illumination and Cultural Events

On March 14, 15, 21, 22, and 23, the temple hosts a special evening illumination, allowing visitors to enjoy the blossoms under soft lights. The glowing plum trees create an elegant and peaceful atmosphere that feels very different from the daytime scenery.

During these evenings, a variety of cultural events take place, including:

  • ・Traditional Gagaku (ancient Japanese court music) performances

Nenbutsu chanting and Buddhist practice experiences

・A unique Hawaiian band performance, reflecting the distinctive cultural spirit of Iwaki

This blend of traditional Japanese culture and local creativity makes the plum blossom event at Senshoji Temple especially memorable.

As the blossoms open and the temple grounds fill with music and light, visitors can experience one of the most charming early-spring scenes in Fukushima.
