Spring

Fukushima Travel – Sakura Pass in Urabandai

Sakura Pass in Urabandai, Fukushima, is a late‑spring spectacle where roughly 3,000 Oyamazakura (mountain cherry) trees burst into bloom.

Photographed on 04/19/2026, the deep‑pink flowers form sweeping ribbons across hillsides, contrasted dramatically with the white, snow‑capped ridgeline of the Iide mountains — a truly panoramic hanami experience.

A living commemoration The current grove began as a commemorative planting for the birth of Her Imperial Highness Princess Aiko in 2001: 2,001 Oyamazakura were planted via an owner‑sponsorship program, with further plantings added through exchanges with Suginami Ward (Tokyo) and New Zealand. The site has since grown to approximately 3,000 trees, far exceeding the scale of Tokyo’s famed spots (Chidorigafuchi ~260, Meguro River ~800).

What makes Oyamazakura special

  • Richer pink than Somei‑yoshino; flowers appear alongside emerging leaves.
  • Blooming can progress rapidly into leafed‑out “hazakura,” so the viewing window is shorter and dramatic.
  • Trees are hardy, having thrived through harsh winters to gain impressive size and presence.
  •

Visitor experience

  • Walkable routes weave through the rows of cherry trees; continue to the lower slopes to absorb the full scale of the planting.
  • Best time: late April to early May (Golden Week), but timing varies year to year — check forecasts.
  • Photography: wide panoramic shots capture the sea of pink against the snowy Iide Range; early morning or late afternoon gives softer light.
  • Amenities: seasonal stalls and local events often accompany peak bloom. Wear layered clothing — mountain weather can be chilly.
