Fukushima Travel – A Sacred Mountain Pilgrimage

Every June, the peaceful town of Nishiaizu in Fukushima Prefecture welcomes thousands of pilgrims and visitors to the annual Oyama Festival at Oyamazumi Shrine.

Photographed on June 20, 2026, the shrine grounds were filled with worshippers seeking blessings from one of the most revered mountain deities in the Aizu region.

For centuries, this sacred place has attracted believers from Fukushima, Niigata, and Yamagata, making it one of the spiritual treasures of rural Japan.

The Shrine That Grants Any Wish

Oyamazumi Shrine is affectionately known as the shrine of the mountain god who grants “any wish.”

According to local tradition, if you visit the shrine for three consecutive years, the deity will listen to any sincere prayer. This belief has inspired generations of worshippers to make the pilgrimage year after year.

The shrine enshrines three deities centered on Oyamatsumi-no-Mikoto, the Shinto god of mountains. Visitors pray for a wide range of blessings, including:

  • – Safe and abundant water sources
  • – Good harvests
  • – Longevity and good health
  • – Safe childbirth
  • – Successful relationships and marriage
  • – Family well-being
  •

The Month-Long Oyama Festival

From June 1 through June 30, the shrine hosts the annual Oyama Festival, a month-long celebration dedicated to prayers for family safety and abundant harvests.

On weekends, visitors can enjoy traditional cultural events such as outdoor tea ceremonies (nodate) and sacred kagura dance performances offered to the gods.

The festival atmosphere combines spirituality, local tradition, and the beauty of early summer in the mountains of Fukushima.

A Healing Pilgrimage Through Ancient Forests

One of the most memorable experiences is the pilgrimage route leading from the worship hall to the main shrine.

The trail stretches approximately 4 kilometers through a magnificent mountain forest.

Along the way, visitors encounter:

  • – Cedar trees over 450 years old
  • – Two beautiful waterfalls
  • – Traditional roadside guardian deities (Dōsojin)
  • – Quiet mountain streams and abundant nature

Walking beneath the towering cedar canopy, visitors are surrounded by a profound silence that feels worlds away from modern life.

The trail is not only a pilgrimage route but also one of Fukushima’s most rewarding nature walks.

Where Nature and Spirituality Meet

Unlike famous tourist shrines in Japan’s major cities, Oyamazumi Shrine offers a deeply authentic experience.

The sound of birds, the scent of cedar forests, and the gentle mountain breeze create an atmosphere that encourages reflection and peace.

Many visitors describe the journey as more than sightseeing—it is an opportunity to reconnect with nature and discover the spiritual heart of rural Japan.

A Hidden Gem in Aizu

For travelers seeking experiences beyond Japan’s well-known destinations, Nishiaizu offers a rare opportunity to explore a living tradition that has endured for centuries.

The Oyama Festival combines sacred rituals, breathtaking nature, and local hospitality in a way that few places can match.

Whether you come to pray, hike, or simply experience the atmosphere, Oyamazumi Shrine leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.
