Fukushima Travel – Akabeko Park in Aizu-Wakamatsu

Located in the historic city of Aizu-Wakamatsu, Akabeko Park (赤べこ公園) is a delightful destination that combines play, culture, and local tradition. The park is dedicated to Akabeko, the beloved red cow figurine and one of the most enduring folk symbols of Fukushima Prefecture.

What is Akabeko?

Akabeko is a traditional toy made from papier-mâché, depicting a red cow with a bobbing head. According to local legend, the origin of Akabeko dates back to the 9th century, during the construction of Enzōji Temple in the nearby town of Yanaizu. It is said that a red cow helped transport materials up the steep slopes and continued working even after death—earning the admiration of the local people.

Later, during a smallpox epidemic, people noticed that children who had Akabeko toys remained healthy. Since then, Akabeko has been regarded as a symbol of good health, protection from illness, and perseverance. Its bright red color is also believed to ward off evil spirits.
