Fukushima Travel – Oguni-numa Marshland – Daylily Meadow in Full Bloom

Tucked away in the mountains of Urabandai, Fukushima Prefecture, the Oguni-numa Marshland (雄国沼湿原) is now ablaze with color as Nikko-kisuge (yellow daylilies) reach full bloom as of June 28. This breathtaking highland marsh is one of Japan’s most stunning hidden gems, with golden flowers spreading like a vast yellow carpet across the wetland.

Designated as a National Natural Monument, the Oguni-numa Plant Community is home to a rich variety of alpine flora. In late June to early July, Nikko-kisuge dominate the landscape. In fact, the density of daylily blooms here is even greater than in Oze, making it Japan’s top location for daylily viewing.

Seasonal Highlights of Oguni-numa

  • Late May: Tateyama gentians and shōjō-bakama (Heloniopsis orientalis)

  • Mid-June: Rhododendrons, cotton grass (watasuge), and false hellebores (kobaikeisō)

  • Late June – Early July: Peak bloom of Nikko-kisuge daylilies

  • October: Golden autumn grass (“kusamomiji”) creates a warm, rust-colored landscape

Important Access Information (2024–2025)

Due to trail closure from the Kitakata side, access is currently only available from the Urabandai side. During the flower season, the closest parking lot is closed, so visitors must park at the former Lavi Spa Urabandai and take a shuttle bus (¥1,000 one-way) to the Oguni-numa Trailhead (Oguni-sawa). A cooperation fee of ¥500 is also required.

From the trailhead, it takes approximately 1.5 hours of moderate hiking to reach the marshland.
