Fukushima Travel – A Spiritual Summer Ritual and Blooming Irises

In the quiet town of Funehiki in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture, the historic Ōkaburaya Shrine (大鏑矢神社) holds a special ceremony to welcome summer and purify the spirit: the Chinowa Shinji (茅の輪神事).

🌿 What Is the Chinowa Ritual?

Held annually on June 30, this traditional ritual helps cleanse the sins and spiritual impurities accumulated over the past six months. At the heart of the ceremony is a large ring made of kaya grass (Chigaya)—a sacred symbol of protection.

According to legend, the deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto once told villagers that during an outbreak of plague, those who wore a ring made of kaya grass around their waists would be spared. This gave rise to the practice of creating a large grass ring (chinowa) through which people walk in a specific pattern—left, right, then left again—to pray for good health and purification.

Visitors, including the general public, are welcome to participate in this ancient and deeply spiritual ritual, which is performed within the beautiful forested grounds of the shrine.

🌸 Seasonal Highlight: Blooming Irises

Currently, the shrine is also in full bloom with elegant hanashōbu (Japanese iris) flowers, creating a stunning contrast to the sacred ritual. The vibrant purples and whites of the irises make this a perfect spot for seasonal photography and quiet reflection.
