Aizu Hignjishi in Enichiji Temple

On May 3, 2025, the historic grounds of Enichi-ji Temple in Bandai Town, Fukushima Prefecture, came alive with the vibrant energy of Aizu Higan Jishi—a traditional lion dance deeply rooted in the spiritual and seasonal culture of the Aizu region.

This special event featured three different regional versions of the Higan Jishi, each showcasing its own distinct movements, rhythm, and storytelling. It was a rare opportunity to experience the diversity of this folk tradition in one setting.

The Aizu Higan Jishi (literally “Equinox Lion Dance”) is a ritual performance traditionally held around the spring equinox, symbolizing the end of winter and the arrival of new life and prosperity. The lion is believed to ward off evil spirits and bless the community with good health and fortune for the coming year. The dance often includes dramatic drumming, dynamic head movements, and symbolic gestures passed down through generations.

The venue, Enichi-ji Temple, is a significant cultural and historical site dating back to the 9th century. Once a major center of Buddhist learning and influence in the Tōhoku region, the temple is now a serene and atmospheric place where tradition and history are preserved. Surrounded by lush forest and views of Mount Bandai, it offers an ideal setting for traditional ceremonies and performances.

This year’s performance not only delighted the audience with its color and power, but also served as a reminder of the rich cultural tapestry of Aizu. Witnessing the three lion dances side by side allowed visitors to appreciate both the shared roots and local expressions of this enduring art form.
