Fukushima Travel – Aizu Tajima Gion Festival – Nanahokai Procession

The Aizu Tajima Gion Festival, held every July in Minamiaizu Town, Fukushima Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most historically significant summer festivals. With a history of over 800 years, it is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Among the many vibrant events that unfold over three days, the most iconic and spiritual is the Nanahokai Procession (七行器行列), held annually on July 23.

🌸 What is the Nanahokai Procession?

The Nanahokai Procession, sometimes called “Japan’s most beautiful bridal parade”, is a sacred reenactment of a bride’s offering ceremony to the deities. In this elegant ritual, young local women known as “Saotome” dress in graceful Heian period (794–1185) garments and move slowly and solemnly through the streets of Tajima.

They are accompanied by attendants carrying seven lacquered offering trays (hokai) containing symbolic gifts—rice, salt, fish, vegetables, and other offerings—to pray for bountiful harvests, family safety, and community well-being.

The procession begins at the main festival area and makes its way to Shinmei Shrine, with a calm and reverent atmosphere contrasting beautifully with the festive energy that surrounds the town during this time.

🏮 A Unique Cultural Heritage in Tohoku

This deeply spiritual and photogenic parade attracts both local residents and travelers seeking an authentic glimpse into rural Japanese culture. Its roots in agricultural prayer and community unity make it one of the three great rice-planting festivals in Japan, alongside events in Kyoto and Osaka.

For those interested in Japanese festivals, traditional costume culture, and religious rituals, the Nanahokai Procession offers a rare and immersive experience.
