Fukushima Travel – Aizu Tajima Gion Festival – Sacred Mikoshi Procession

Date: July 23, 2025 | Location: Minamiaizu Town, Fukushima

On the morning of July 23, the historic Aizu Tajima Gion Festival continued its vibrant celebration with a solemn bridal procession, followed by one of the festival’s most powerful and spiritual events—the Mikoshi Togyo (神輿渡御), or portable shrine procession.

🔸 Sacred Energy through the Streets of Tajima

After departing from Shinmei Shrine, the mikoshi (portable shrine) was carried through the streets of Tajima by devoted participants dressed in traditional attire. The procession symbolizes the divine presence of the local deity visiting the community, offering blessings and protection. The sound of chanting, rhythmic footsteps, and the sway of the mikoshi created an awe-inspiring scene deeply rooted in Shinto tradition.

🥁 Echoes of Tradition: Aizu Tajima Taiko Performance

Following the procession, the crowd was treated to an electrifying taiko drum performance by the renowned Aizu Tajima Taiko group. The powerful beats resonated through the summer air, energizing the festival and drawing applause from visitors. This taiko performance is a highlight of the festival, showcasing the rhythmic soul of Aizu and the spirit of community.

🌿 A Living Tradition in Fukushima’s Southern Highlands

The Aizu Tajima Gion Festival, held annually from July 22–24, is one of the most culturally rich events in Fukushima Prefecture. With a history of over 800 years, it is recognized as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. From the graceful Nanahokai (bridal offering) procession to the dynamic mikoshi parade and taiko drumming, this festival offers a rare, immersive experience into the traditions of rural Japan.
