Fukushima Travel – Aizuwakamatsu – Ishibe zakura

Located in the tranquil fields of Aizuwakamatsu City, Ishibe-zakura is one of the most iconic and beloved cherry trees in the Aizu region. This majestic Edohigan cherry tree, estimated to be around 650 years old, is deeply rooted in local history and legend.

Ishibe-zakura gained national attention when it appeared in the opening scene of the historical TV drama “Yae no Sakura”, which portrayed the story of a strong Aizu-born woman during Japan’s tumultuous Meiji Restoration era. Today, it stands proudly as one of the most representative cherry trees of Aizu.

According to local tradition, this tree once stood in the garden of Jibudayu Ishibe, a senior retainer of the Ashina clan, the feudal lords who ruled Aizu in the medieval period. The tree consists of ten main trunks, and its branches spread widely—reaching about 20 meters at their broadest—creating a powerful yet graceful silhouette.

The expansive, sweeping form of Ishibe-zakura captivates all who see it. Surrounded entirely by rice paddies, the tree stands out dramatically in the rural landscape, making it an especially photogenic and peaceful spot during the bloom season.

As of April 19, 2025, the tree was in full bloom, its pale pink flowers cascading down in gentle waves. The scene is not only beautiful but also rich with historical and cultural significance, offering a unique connection to Aizu’s samurai heritage and the passage of centuries.

Ishibe-zakura is more than just a cherry tree—it is a living monument to Aizu’s enduring spirit, tradition, and deep reverence for nature.
