Cherry Blossoms – Isasumi Shrine

As of April 27, 2025, the magnificent Usuzumi Zakura (Pale Ink Cherry Tree) at Isasumi Shrine in Aizumisato Town, Fukushima Prefecture, has reached full bloom. This rare cherry variety is known for the way its petals subtly change color—from soft pink when in bud, to pale white in full bloom, and finally to a delicate grayish hue as they fall, resembling diluted ink. Its quiet, refined beauty symbolizes both the fleeting nature of life and the grace of aging, making it deeply revered in Japanese culture.

The Isasumi Shrine itself is one of the oldest and most historically significant shrines in the Aizu region, with a history dating back over 2,000 years. Surrounded by ancient trees and sacred atmosphere, it has long been a place where locals come to pray for good harvests and protection.

Adding to the seasonal charm, on April 29, the shrine will host a mochi-making festival, where cherry blossom petals from the Usuzumi Zakura are mixed into freshly pounded rice cakes. This unique event invites visitors to both appreciate the flowers and partake in a local culinary tradition that celebrates spring in a tactile and flavorful way.

With the timeless beauty of the blossoms, the spiritual setting of the shrine, and the warm hospitality of the community, this experience offers a meaningful connection to Japan’s cultural and natural heritage.
