Cherry Blossoms – Kasumigajo Castle

Located in Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, Kasumigajo Castle (霞ヶ城), also known as Nihonmatsu Castle, is one of Japan’s most beautiful cherry blossom viewing spots. This historic site, with its scenic castle ruins and breathtaking sakura trees, offers visitors a chance to experience Japan’s rich history and natural beauty in one place.

A Castle Steeped in History

Originally built in 1341, Kasumigajo Castle served as the stronghold of the Nihonmatsu Domain during the Edo period. Though much of the original structure was lost over time, the stone walls and gates remain, preserving the castle’s historical charm. The site is also famous for its connection to the tragic story of the Nihonmatsu Youth Corps, a group of young samurai who bravely fought in the Boshin War (1868-1869).

A Top Cherry Blossom Spot

Kasumigajo Castle is widely regarded as one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots (日本さくら名所100選). Every spring, around 1,700 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino and Shidarezakura (weeping cherry trees), bloom in spectacular fashion. The castle ruins, surrounded by soft pink petals, create a magical and picturesque scene, attracting countless visitors during the Cherry Blossom Festival in April.

Stunning Views and Night Illuminations

From the castle grounds, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Nihonmatsu City and the surrounding mountains. From the top of the castle, you can also see the magnificent Mt. Adatara (Adatara-yama), adding to the breathtaking scenery. In the evening, the cherry blossoms are illuminated, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that enhances the beauty of the castle ruins.

Experience Japan’s History and Sakura Magic

Kasumigajo Castle is not only a place to admire cherry blossoms but also a site rich in samurai history and cultural significance. Whether you visit during the day or at night, the combination of ancient stone walls and delicate cherry blossoms offers an unforgettable hanami (cherry blossom viewing) experience.
