Cherry Blossoms – Miharu Takizakura

Located in Miharu Town, Fukushima Prefecture, Miharu Takizakura (三春の滝桜) is one of Japan’s most famous and breathtaking cherry trees. Its name, meaning “Waterfall Cherry Blossom,” comes from the way its countless pink blossoms cascade down its massive branches, resembling a flowing waterfall.

A National Treasure Over 1,000 Years Old

This magnificent weeping cherry tree (Shidarezakura) is estimated to be over 1,000 years old and stands at around 13.5 meters (44 feet) tall, with branches spreading over 25 meters (82 feet) in width. Designated as a National Natural Monument, it is considered one of Japan’s Three Great Cherry Trees (日本三大桜) and is widely admired as a symbol of longevity, beauty, and resilience.

Best Time to Visit

The tree typically blooms in mid-April, when its delicate pink blossoms reach full bloom, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Visitors from all over Japan come to witness this ancient tree in its full glory, illuminated by both daylight and stunning evening lights. The surrounding area also features many other cherry trees, making it a perfect spot for hanami (cherry blossom viewing).
