Cherry Blossoms – Nicchu Line in Kitaka

As of April 22, 2025, the famous weeping cherry trees along the former Nitchū Line in Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture, are in full bloom, offering visitors one of the most enchanting springtime experiences in the region. (Photos are taken in April 22nd)

This beloved spot features a roughly 3-kilometer-long cherry blossom tunnel, where nearly 1,000 weeping cherry trees (shidare-zakura) line both sides of the old railway track, which once connected Kitakata to Atsushio Onsen. The tracks have since been transformed into a scenic walking path, where visitors can stroll beneath gracefully arching branches overflowing with soft pink blossoms.

The view is particularly magical when seen from the preserved steam locomotive that still stands near the path, evoking a sense of nostalgia and connecting the beauty of the natural world with the area’s rich history. The calm, rural setting—surrounded by mountains and rice fields—enhances the sense of serenity and timelessness.

Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely walk beneath the blossoms, taking photos from the old platform, or simply soaking in the spring air, the Nitchū Line sakura tunnel is a hidden gem that captures the heart of Japan’s cherry blossom season.

This is an ideal time to visit—while the blossoms are at their peak—and experience the quiet elegance of Kitakata’s countryside charm in full bloom.

Located in Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture, the Nicchu Line Weeping Cherry Blossoms (Nicchusen Shidarezakura) is one of the most stunning and unique cherry blossom spots in Japan. This picturesque site features a 3-kilometer-long row of weeping cherry trees (Shidarezakura) planted along the former Nicchu Railway Line, which once connected Kitakata with Yonezawa. Today, the old railway has been transformed into a beautiful cherry blossom promenade, attracting visitors each spring with its breathtaking scenery.

A Historic Railway Turned Sakura Path

The Nitchū Line operated from 1913 to 1984, playing a vital role in the region’s transportation and economic development. After the railway was discontinued, the tracks were removed, and in 1990, around 1,000 weeping cherry trees were planted along the former railway route to preserve its memory. Over the years, these trees have grown into a spectacular tunnel of cascading pink blossoms, creating an enchanting sight each spring.

A Dreamlike Cherry Blossom Experience

During mid to late April, the Shidarezakura reach full bloom, forming an elegant archway of pink blossoms that stretches for kilometers. Visitors can walk or cycle along the path, enjoying the serene and romantic atmosphere. The contrast between the delicate weeping cherry branches, the lush greenery, and the remnants of the old railway, including a displayed steam locomotive (SL), makes this a one-of-a-kind hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spot.

Nighttime Illuminations and Seasonal Charm

In the evening, the cherry blossoms are illuminated, creating a magical and ethereal ambiance. The soft glow of the lights enhances the beauty of the gracefully drooping branches, making it a must-see destination for both photographers and nature lovers.

A Hidden Gem in Fukushima’s Countryside

Unlike Japan’s more famous cherry blossom spots, the Nicchu Line Shidarezakura remains relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists, allowing for a peaceful and immersive sakura experience. Surrounded by the rural beauty of Kitakata, famous for its traditional storehouses (kura) and delicious ramen, this hidden gem offers an authentic taste of Japan’s countryside charm.
