Cherry Blossoms – Sakurazaka in Dake hotsprings

In Dake Onsen, a peaceful mountain hot spring town in Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, the cherry blossoms along Sakura-zaka (Sakura Hill) are now in full bloom. This picturesque slope is lined with graceful cherry trees that form a soft pink tunnel, making it one of the most scenic and beloved walking spots in the area during spring. Adding to the seasonal charm, April 21 was a Monday, which means it was “Milky Day” at Dake Onsen. This unique weekly tradition occurs every Monday, when the Yumori (hot spring caretaker) performs maintenance on the source of the hot spring water, which comes directly from Mount Adatara.

As part of this process, the natural yubana (hot spring minerals or “hot water flowers”) are stirred up and released into the baths. This causes the normally clear onsen water to turn into a milky white color, rich with minerals and offering a different sensory experience than usual. This cloudy, healing water appears only on Mondays, making it a rare and special treat for visitors.

Experiencing the full bloom of sakura at Sakura-zaka followed by a soak in the milky-white onsen is a combination of natural beauty and traditional wellness you can only find in a place like Dake Onsen.

If you’re looking for an authentic and serene springtime experience in Japan, Dake Onsen’s Sakura-zaka and Milky Monday offer something truly unforgettable.

Sakurazaka (Cherry Blossom Hill) in Dake Onsen, Nihonmatsu City, is one of the most beautiful cherry blossom spots in Fukushima Prefecture.

This charming hill is lined with about 300 cherry trees, which create a breathtaking tunnel of blossoms when they are in full bloom. The contrast of the soft pink petals against the backdrop of Mount Adatara adds to the magical atmosphere, making it a must-see destination during spring.

Sakurazaka is located in Dake Onsen, a historic hot spring resort known for its high-quality acidic sulfur waters. After enjoying the cherry blossoms, visitors can relax in the soothing hot springs and experience the rejuvenating effects of the natural minerals.

For a relaxing break, stop by Sora no Niwa (空の庭), a cozy and charming facility in Dake Onsen. Sora no Niwa features a café with delicious local treats, a gift shop offering unique souvenirs, and a peaceful garden where you can unwind and enjoy the serene atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to recharge before or after your cherry blossom viewing.

The cherry blossoms at Sakurazaka typically bloom from mid to late April, depending on the weather conditions. Evening illuminations are sometimes held during the peak season, offering a different and enchanting view of the blossoms under the night sky.

Access to Sakurazaka is relatively easy by car or bus from Nihonmatsu Station. However, parking can be limited during peak bloom periods, so planning ahead is recommended.
