Cherry Blossoms – Toranoo Sakura

The Toranoo Sakura (Tiger’s Tail Cherry Tree) at Hoyo-ji Temple in Aizumisato Town, Fukushima Prefecture, was in full bloom as of April 27, 2025, when this photo was taken—showcasing one of the region’s most remarkable and lesser-known cherry blossoms.

This tree is a rare and distinctive variety, known for its gracefully curved branches that resemble a tiger’s tail, which gives the tree its name. The blossoms themselves feature uniquely shaped petals, often slightly curled or fringed, setting them apart from more typical cherry varieties. Estimated to be over 500 years old, this tree stands as a natural monument and living piece of local history.

Hoyo-ji Temple is also home to a fascinating local tradition known as “Hebi no Onenji”, or “The Snake’s New Year’s Visit.” This centuries-old ritual, held each January, involves a symbolic offering to a snake deity said to reside at the temple. Villagers present sacred rice cakes and other items to the snake spirit in hopes of ensuring health, safety, and good fortune for the year. The tradition reflects deep spiritual ties between the community and the natural world, echoing the reverence felt toward ancient trees like the Tora-no-O Sakura.

Surrounded by rural serenity and spiritual legacy, Hōyō-ji offers not only breathtaking seasonal beauty but also a glimpse into the rich folklore and culture of the Aizu region.
