Chigomai Dance at Mannin Komori Jizoson

On May 3rd and 4th, a deeply meaningful traditional ceremony was held over two days at Mannin Komori Jizō-son in Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, a sacred site known as the “Guardian of Ten Thousand Children.” The event centered around the Chigo-mai, a ceremonial dance performed by local children to offer prayers for the health and happiness of all children.

Unlike many other traditional dances in Japan, the Chigo-mai at Mannin Komori is performed in a uniquely solemn setting, accompanied by the gentle ringing of bells, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere of the ritual. Dressed in elegant ceremonial kimono and ornate headpieces, the children performed with grace and dignity, embodying the prayers of the community.

A significant part of the event is the Return of the Substitute Jizō (Migawari Jizō no Satogaeri), in which families who have temporarily enshrined a substitute statue of Jizō in their homes return it to the temple in gratitude. These statues are believed to absorb misfortune or illness on behalf of the children they protect. Their return is a deeply emotional and symbolic act of thanks and spiritual renewal.

Mannin Komori Jizō-son has long been a place of worship for those praying for children’s well-being, including safe childbirth, good health, and memorials for those who have passed. Through this annual two-day event, the temple continues to serve as a vital link between tradition, community, and heartfelt prayer.

This intimate and powerful ceremony offers visitors a rare window into the quiet strength and compassion that define rural Japanese spirituality and culture.
