Fukushima Travel – “Oningyo-sama” Protective Figures of Tamura

Deep in the heart of Fukushima Prefecture, in the quiet countryside of Tamura City, stand towering figures known as Oningyo-sama (お人形様) — powerful guardian deities believed to ward off evil spirits and disease. These imposing statues, with their fierce expressions and fearsome weapons, are a must-see for travelers exploring Japan’s rich folklore and spiritual traditions.

🛡️ A Legendary Protector Against Evil

The tradition of the Oningyo-sama dates back to the Edo period, when a deadly epidemic swept through the region along the old Iwaki Highway. In response, locals erected these protective guardian statues at key entrances to their villages to prevent malevolent forces from entering.

Each figure stands about 4 meters tall, armed with a naginata or sword, arms outstretched in a “no entry” stance — a powerful symbol of protection. Their demonic faces, resembling giant ogres, glare outwards to keep evil and misfortune at bay.

📍 Three Unique Locations in Tamura

There are currently three Oningyo-sama statues standing in Tamura City — located in the districts of Yakata, Honokibashi (朴橋), and Horikoshi. While each shares the same purpose, they have distinct facial expressions, making it worth visiting all three as part of your Fukushima cultural tour.

👘 An Annual Tradition of Respect

Every April, the local preservation society carefully redresses the statues, maintaining their condition and renewing their protective energy. It’s a meaningful local tradition that highlights the community’s continued reverence for these silent guardians.
