Fukushima Travel – Fukushima Inari Shrine Autumn Festival

From October 11 to 13, the city of Fukushima comes alive with the vibrant Autumn Grand Festival of Fukushima Inari Shrine (Fukushima Inari Jinja Shuki Reitaisai). This centuries-old celebration honors the harvest season and the local guardian deities, filling the prefectural capital with joy, rhythm, and light.

The highlight of the festival takes place on the evening of October 12, when the spectacular Rendashi Parade (連山車) lights up the city streets. A total of 23 beautifully crafted floats, each with its own unique design and traditional character, make their way through downtown Fukushima. Accompanied by the rhythmic beat of drums, flutes, and the lively shouts of “Yāre, yare, yare!”, the night turns into a dazzling display of sound and energy.

Locals dressed in traditional attire pull the massive festival floats (yatai) through the illuminated streets, while children and musicians perform festive melodies that echo through the autumn night. The atmosphere is electric yet heartwarming—a perfect blend of community spirit and ancient Shinto tradition that has been cherished for generations.

For visitors, this is more than a festival—it’s a living expression of Tohoku’s deep cultural heritage. Experiencing the Fukushima Inari Shrine Autumn Festival offers a glimpse into Japan’s enduring connection between the gods, the harvest, and the people who celebrate both with gratitude and passion.

Because public transportation during the festival can be limited, we recommend exploring the event with Deep Japan Tours, your trusted local expert for discovering authentic and unforgettable cultural experiences across Fukushima and the Tohoku region.
