Fukushima Travel – Futaba Daruma Market

On January 10–11, 2026, the traditional Futaba Daruma Market was held in Futaba, marking one of the town’s most important and meaningful annual events. This long-standing winter tradition has been cherished by generations of local residents and continues to play a vital role in preserving Futaba’s cultural identity.

A Rare Chance to Purchase the Sacred Futaba Daruma

At the heart of the festival is the Futaba Daruma, a local lucky charm symbolizing perseverance, good fortune, and success. Unlike many other daruma dolls in Japan, Futaba Daruma are sold only once a year—during this market, making the event a special and eagerly anticipated occasion.

Visitors from across Fukushima and beyond come specifically to purchase these auspicious dolls and make wishes for the year ahead.

Lively Events Fill the Town Center

During the two-day market, the town center comes alive with energy and celebration. Numerous food stalls and vendor booths line the streets, creating a festive atmosphere filled with warmth even in the heart of winter.

One of the most eye-catching highlights is the Giant Daruma Tug-of-War, where residents from the northern and southern parts of the town compete by pulling an enormous daruma doll placed at the center of the town. The event is both playful and symbolic, representing unity, friendly rivalry, and shared hopes for prosperity.

Other popular attractions include the Daruma Mikoshi (portable shrine), carried through the streets to pray for business success and good fortune, as well as dedicated kagura performances, offered to the deities as a sacred expression of gratitude and prayer.

Revival After the Great East Japan Earthquake

Following the Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear disaster, the Futaba Daruma Market faced an uncertain future. Thanks to the dedication of local volunteers known as “Yume Futaba People”, the festival was successfully revived and continued for many years in temporary housing and reconstruction housing areas.

After the lifting of the evacuation order in August 2022, the event returned to a more central location and is now held in front of Futaba Station, symbolizing a major step forward in the town’s recovery and revitalization.

A Festival That Connects Past, Present, and Future

Today, the Futaba Daruma Market stands as a powerful reminder of resilience, community strength, and hope. More than just a traditional festival, it represents Futaba’s determination to protect its heritage while moving toward the future.

For travelers seeking meaningful cultural experiences in Fukushima, this winter festival offers a rare opportunity to witness how tradition can survive hardship and continue to bring people together.
