Fukushima Travel – Hidden Summer Festival in Kitakata

If you’re looking for a truly authentic Japanese festival experience away from the crowds of Kyoto or Tokyo, the annual Kitamiya Suwa Shrine Festival in Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture, is a hidden gem worth discovering. Held every year in early August, this vibrant event showcases the enduring traditions and communal spirit of this historic sake-brewing town in northern Japan.

Taikodai Floats and Sake Barrel Mikoshi: A Feast for the Senses

On the night of August 2, the quiet streets of Kitakata come alive with the rhythmic power of 12 massive taikodai (festival floats). Each float is adorned with lanterns and accompanied by dedicated teams of performers who beat drums, blow flutes, and strike bells in unison. From 7:00 p.m., the floats parade through the town before converging in a spectacular display of synchronized music and movement that fills the air with excitement.

In addition to the taikodai, one of the highlights is the sake barrel mikoshi, a portable shrine featuring large sake casks—an homage to Kitakata’s brewing heritage. As it’s hoisted and carried through the streets by energetic locals, cheers and chants echo through the neighborhood.

Explore Kitakata’s Cultural Landmarks

Kitakata is best known as the “Town of Storehouses” (Kura-no-Machi), with over 4,000 kura storehouses that once stored sake, miso, and valuable goods. Many of these historic buildings have been beautifully preserved and now house galleries, museums, and shops offering local crafts. Kitakata is also famous nationwide for Kitakata Ramen, a distinctive soy sauce-based noodle dish with flat, curly noodles that attracts food enthusiasts from all over Japan. Sampling a bowl of authentic Kitakata Ramen is an essential part of any visit.

Why Add Kitakata to Your Fukushima Travel Itinerary?
