Fukushima Travel – Hike to Mt. Issaikyo

For an unforgettable hiking experience in Fukushima, head to Mt. Issaikyo (一切経山)—a volcanic peak located along the scenic Bandai-Azuma Skyline. This moderate mountain trail is perfect for Japan travel enthusiasts looking for panoramic views, alpine flowers, and a cool escape from the summer heat.

As of June 18, parts of the trail still feature patches of lingering snow, and the crisp, refreshing mountain breeze is a pleasant contrast to the warmer temperatures in the lowlands.

At the summit of Mt. Issaikyo, you’ll be rewarded with multiple breathtaking views:

  • To the east, a wide overlook of Fukushima City, stretching far into the distance

  • To the south, a unique view from above of Azuma-Kofuji (Little Mount Fuji)—its symmetrical crater is especially striking from this angle

  • And directly below, the mystical Goshikinuma (The Witch’s Eye), a vividly blue crater lake that changes color with the light

The trail is not only scenic but also rich in seasonal beauty. In June, the area comes alive with charming Iwakagami (small pink alpine flowers) and Chinguruma, delicate white blooms typical of Japan’s highlands.

On the return route, hikers can enjoy a peaceful detour around Kamanuma, a serene highland pond surrounded by volcanic terrain and alpine vegetation. This short loop adds extra variety to your Fukushima hiking tour, perfect for those wanting to immerse themselves further in the area’s natural landscape.

Trail Details:

  • Start/End: Jododaira Visitor Center (along the Bandai-Azuma Skyline)

  • Duration: Approx. 1.5–2.5 hours (including the Kamanuma loop)

  • Difficulty: Moderate, with light snow and rocky sections (as of mid-June)

📷 Photos from June 18 show vivid greenery, alpine flowers, snow-dusted trails, and sweeping views—ideal for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Note: The Bandai-Azuma Skyline features narrow mountain roads that may be difficult for some travelers. For a safer, more comfortable journey, we highly recommend a guided tour with Deep Japan Tours, offering expert drivers, English-speaking guides, and personalized Fukushima travel experiences.

Add Mt. Issaikyo to your next Japan tour and enjoy one of Fukushima’s most scenic hikes—complete with crater lakes, wildflowers, and sweeping views from above the clouds.
