Fukushima Travel – Japanese Lady’s Slipper, Kumagai sou

As of May 15, 2025, over 11,000 blooming Kumagai-sou (Cypripedium japonicum) have transformed the Mizuhara area of Matsukawa Town, Fukushima City into a breathtaking sea of rare orchid blossoms. This hidden gem in Fukushima Prefecture is now attracting nature lovers and photographers from across Japan and abroad.

Kumagai-sou, a perennial orchid species belonging to the orchid family, is listed as an endangered species by both the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the Fukushima Prefectural Government. Its uniquely shaped, helmet-like flowers and rarity make it a botanical treasure. Blooming only for a short period in spring, the sight of thousands flowering in unison is a fleeting natural wonder.

The Mizuhara district is recognized as one of Japan’s largest natural habitats for Kumagai-sou, making it a key conservation site and a must-see destination for eco-travelers. Visitors can stroll through carefully maintained trails that wind through shaded woodland, providing a serene Fukushima travel experience unlike any other.

Whether you’re planning a spring tour in Fukushima, or looking for unique, off-the-beaten-path Japan travel destinations, the Kumagai-sou colony in Mizuhara offers a rare opportunity to witness a floral spectacle of national importance.
