In the mountains of Shimogo Town, Fukushima Prefecture, a spectacular landscape appears every year at the end of summer.

The Sarugaku Plateau Buckwheat Fields are now in full bloom, with vast fields covered in delicate white buckwheat flowers.

Known locally as “Japan’s No.1 Buckwheat Field,” Sarugaku Plateau is one of the most beautiful places in southern Aizu to experience the peaceful countryside of Japan. The fields cover approximately 23 hectares, creating an incredible panorama of white flowers surrounded by mountains.

A White Carpet Stretching Across the Plateau

Sarugaku Plateau sits at an elevation of approximately 600–700 meters.

From late August to early September, countless tiny white flowers bloom across the plateau, creating what looks like an enormous white carpet.

The combination of the white flowers, blue sky, surrounding mountains, and quiet rural roads creates a remarkably beautiful landscape.

This is rural Japan at its most peaceful.

Unlike famous tourist attractions surrounded by crowds, Sarugaku Plateau offers a chance to simply stop, breathe the fresh mountain air, and enjoy the scenery.

 

Why Is It Called Japan’s No.1 Buckwheat Field?

Sarugaku Plateau is known as “Japan’s No.1 Buckwheat Field” because of the impressive scale and quality of its buckwheat production.

The plateau is particularly well suited to growing buckwheat, thanks to its elevation and the significant difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures.

The area is also recognized for producing high-quality buckwheat. The beautiful landscape of the flowering fields won the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award in the production category of the 7th Beautiful Japanese Villages Contest.

 

From Beautiful Flowers to Delicious Soba

There is an especially enjoyable connection between the landscape and local food.

The white flowers you see across the plateau eventually produce buckwheat, the main ingredient used to make soba noodles, one of Japan’s most beloved traditional foods.

In Shimogo, the local climate and abundant clean water help produce high-quality buckwheat.

After admiring the flowers, visitors can enjoy freshly made local soba and discover how the beautiful countryside connects directly to the food culture of Aizu.

A soba restaurant is located nearby, where you can taste Sarugaku Soba, made from locally grown buckwheat.

The flowering season is short.

The fields are generally at their best from late August to early September, making the white landscape a seasonal spectacle that can only be enjoyed for a limited time each year.

After the buckwheat is harvested in autumn, the landscape changes once again.
