Fukushima Travel – Lady’s Slipper, Nihonmatsu

Nestled in the serene forests of Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, the Hayama no Sato Kumagai-sō Garden is now in full bloom, offering a breathtaking display of one of Japan’s most delicate and rare wildflowers — the Kumagai-sō (Cypripedium japonicum), a species of lady’s slipper orchid.

As of mid-May, approximately 20,000 blooming Kumagai-sō orchids are covering a 2,000-square-meter woodland area, creating a magical carpet of soft pink and pale green flowers. Each bloom resembles a small pouch or slipper, giving the species its charming and unique appearance.

What makes this garden even more special is its incredible story. The dedicated garden owner began this project 50 years ago with just two plants. Through decades of care, patience, and deep respect for nature, they cultivated this stunning population — now one of the largest known Kumagai-sō colonies in Japan.

For nature enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking a deep, authentic Japan travel experience, this is a must-visit Fukushima tour destination. Unlike the major tourist attractions, Hayama no Sato remains a peaceful and uncrowded spot, perfect for those looking to explore the hidden beauty of rural Fukushima travel.

The garden’s setting — beneath tall trees and surrounded by fresh mountain air — enhances the ethereal quality of these rare flowers. It’s a seasonal phenomenon, typically peaking in May, and should not be missed by travelers interested in botany, conservation, or off-the-beaten-path tours in Japan.

Because the garden is located in a remote forested area with limited public access, we highly recommend joining a guided experience with Deep Japan Tours, who specialize in connecting travelers with Japan’s lesser-known natural and cultural treasures.
