Fukushima Travel – Matsukawa Lantern Festival

On October 12, the quiet town of Matsukawa in Fukushima City transforms into a glowing celebration of tradition during the Matsukawa Lantern Festival (Matsukawa Chochin Matsuri). This annual autumn event brings together the community in a dazzling nighttime parade of lights, sound, and spirit.

A total of 12 beautifully decorated festival floats (yatai) are adorned with hundreds of glowing paper lanterns (chochin) and paraded through the streets. As night falls, the warm orange light from the lanterns illuminates the town, creating a truly magical atmosphere that lasts for just one night. The powerful chants of young participants, the rhythmic beats of drums and flutes, and the shimmering lanterns combine to create a scene that captures the essence of traditional Japan.

The festival reflects the rich cultural heritage of Fukushima Prefecture and the deep community bonds that continue to thrive in Japan’s countryside. Visitors can experience the energy and warmth of a local matsuri that few tourists ever see — a rare chance to feel both excitement and nostalgia in the heart of Tohoku.

Public transportation to Matsukawa can be limited, so for those wishing to experience this unforgettable night with comfort and insight, we recommend joining Deep Japan Tours, your trusted guide to discovering authentic cultural festivals and hidden treasures across Fukushima and beyond.
