Fukushima Travel – Mitama Festival in Aizu-Yanaizu

On August 10, the peaceful town of Aizu-Yanaizu in Fukushima Prefecture celebrated its annual Mitama Festival (霊まつり), a cherished summer event dedicated to honoring ancestors and remembering those lost in past tragedies.

The Great Buddhist Memorial Service was held at Fukuman Kokūzō Enzōji Temple (福満虚空蔵円蔵寺), one of the town’s most important spiritual landmarks. Due to rain, the traditional Chigo Gyoretsu (稚児行列 – children dressed in vibrant traditional attire) was adapted: instead of parading through the streets, the young participants solemnly circled the temple’s main hall three times, filling the grounds with a quiet yet profound sense of reverence.

Although the evening fireworks were postponed to August 11, the skies eventually cleared, allowing the much-anticipated display to take place. Before the first burst lit the night, a moment of silence was observed in remembrance of those who perished in the Great East Japan Earthquake. The fireworks, known as “Prayers in the Sky,” were launched along the banks of the Tadami River, their shimmering reflections dancing on the water’s surface. The vibrant colors framed against the iconic red suspension bridge of Yanaizu created a scene of breathtaking beauty that will linger in the memories of all who attended.
