Mizubasho (Shunk Cabbage) in Urabandai

In the tranquil highlands of Urabandai, located in Fukushima Prefecture, the arrival of spring brings with it one of the region’s most peaceful and captivating natural sights: the blooming of mizubashō, or Asian skunk cabbage. As of early May, these delicate white flowers are now in full bloom in the wetlands just below the former LaviSpa Urabandai facility.

Nestled in a quiet marsh surrounded by forest, the area comes alive with thousands of skunk cabbage flowers standing tall in shallow water. Their pure white spathes and vibrant green leaves emerge from the thawed earth, signaling the end of winter and the renewal of life in the mountains. The stillness of the wetland, paired with the soft rustling of leaves and birdsong, makes for an almost sacred atmosphere—offering a peaceful escape for visitors.

The bloom typically lasts only a short time, making it a fleeting but treasured moment in Urabandai’s seasonal calendar. Locals and travelers alike come to witness this gentle display, often pairing it with visits to nearby scenic spots like Lake Hibara, Goshikinuma (Five-Colored Ponds), and Mount Bandai.

If you’re searching for an off-the-beaten-path experience in Japan’s countryside, the blooming mizubashō in Urabandai offers a rare blend of purity, quiet beauty, and seasonal wonder—a true gem of Tohoku nature.
