Fukushima Travel – Naked Pilgrimage at Enzō-ji Temple

On January 7, one of Fukushima’s most powerful winter traditions, the Nanokadō Hadaka Mairi (Seven-Day Hall Naked Pilgrimage), was held at Enzō-ji Temple in Yanaizu.

The ritual began at 8:30 p.m., under bitterly cold conditions that made this year’s event especially severe—and all the more awe-inspiring.

A Sacred New Year Ritual with Over 1000 Years of History

The Nanokadō Hadaka Mairi is a traditional temple rite held on the night of January 7, dedicated to Fukuman Kokūzō Bosatsu, the principal deity of Enzō-ji Temple. According to legend, villagers once united to drive away a dragon god said to dwell in the Tadami River, and this dramatic ritual commemorates that act of communal strength and faith.

As blazing bonfires light up the snowy streets and the deep sound of the temple bell echoes through the town, men wearing nothing but traditional loincloths (fundoshi) charge through the snow toward the giant bell (ōwaniguchi) at Kikukōdō Hall. Their determined expressions, rising steam, and powerful chants create an unforgettable spectacle that captivates all who witness it.

Open Participation and Local Hospitality

One of the unique features of this ritual is that any man, regardless of age, is welcome to participate, praying for good health, happiness, and protection from illness in the coming year. Women are not permitted to take part in the ritual itself, but observing this intense and moving tradition is an experience well worth seeing.

Throughout the town, visitors are welcomed with warm hospitality. On this freezing night, free servings of oshiruko (sweet red bean soup) and kozuyu, a traditional Aizu vegetable soup, were offered to spectators—providing both comfort and a taste of local culture.

A Powerful Winter Experience in Fukushima

The Nanokadō Hadaka Mairi is more than a festival—it is a living expression of faith, endurance, and community spirit that has been passed down for generations. Against the backdrop of snow, fire, and prayer, this event offers a rare opportunity to experience the raw energy of traditional Japan.

For travelers seeking authentic winter culture in Fukushima, this sacred ritual in Yanaizu is truly unforgettable and stands as one of the region’s most dramatic New Year traditions.
