Fukushima Travel – Obama Montsuki Festival

On October 11th and 12th, the historic Obama Montsuki Festival (小浜の紋付祭り) took place in Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, bringing together centuries of tradition, community pride, and striking visual beauty. This festival is one of the most distinguished cultural events in the Tohoku region, known for its participants dressed in formal “montsuki” attire, traditional black kimono featuring family crests, symbolizing dignity and respect.

On the main festival day (October 12th), the streets of the old Obama district came alive as groups of men in montsuki led grand festival floats (dashi) through town. The rhythmic beats of drums and flutes echoed through the streets, creating a powerful yet refined atmosphere that captures the very essence of Japanese tradition. As the sun began to set, the mikoshi (portable shrine) returned to its home shrine in a solemn ceremony known as the Kangyo-shinji. When the ritual was complete, the crowd erupted in a celebratory “Banzai!”, filling the night with joyful voices.

As darkness fell, the atmosphere transformed once again — the festival floats were illuminated with hundreds of glowing paper lanterns, turning the streets into a dreamlike procession of light. The reflection of the lanterns against the black montsuki garments created a stunning contrast — an image that perfectly represents the harmony between elegance and energy in Japanese festivals.

The Obama Montsuki Festival is not just a celebration; it is a living connection to the past. Rooted deeply in local tradition, it embodies the pride and identity of the people of Nihonmatsu. The sight of men proudly pulling the illuminated floats in formal attire against the backdrop of the cool autumn night is a scene that leaves a lasting impression on all who witness it.

For travelers exploring Fukushima and Tohoku, this event offers a rare opportunity to experience authentic Japanese festival culture up close — a blend of heritage, artistry, and community spirit that continues to shine through generations.
