Fukushima Travel – Ouchi-juku Snow Festival

On February 14 and 15, the historic post town of Ouchi-juku in Shimogo hosted its annual Snow Festival, transforming this beautifully preserved Edo-period village into a breathtaking winter stage.

Blanketed in deep snow, the thatched-roof streets looked as though time had stopped centuries ago. Yet during these two special days, the quiet village came alive with celebration.

Daytime Festivities: Energy in the Snow

Visitors enjoyed lively Yosakoi dance performances, filling the snowy streets with rhythm and color. The popular soba noodle speed-eating contest brought laughter and friendly competition, adding a playful spirit to the traditional setting.

In front of the historic honjin (former official inn), colorful Aizu-style “Dango Sashi” decorations were displayed. These traditional New Year ornaments, made of branches decorated with bright rice dumplings, added vivid color to the pure white snow—creating a beautiful contrast unique to winter in Aizu.

Nightfall: Illumination and Fireworks

As evening arrived, Ouchi-juku transformed into a dreamlike landscape. The entire post town was softly illuminated, casting warm light across the snow-covered thatched roofs. The atmosphere became quiet, romantic, and almost otherworldly.

Then came the highlight of the festival: fireworks lighting up the winter sky.

The sight of brilliant fireworks exploding above the preserved Edo-period streets is something truly extraordinary. The harmony between centuries-old architecture and modern fireworks creates a scene that can only be experienced here—a rare fusion of history and celebration set against the snowy mountains of Fukushima.
