Fukushima Travel – Sainokami

Sainokami is a traditional winter fire festival passed down through generations in the Aizu region of Fukushima. This sacred ritual marks the end of the New Year season and is held to send off the Sainokami (New Year deity) back to the heavens.

During the ceremony, New Year decorations, sacred ornaments, and offerings once placed on household altars are respectfully burned in a large ceremonial fire. Through this act of purification, people pray for abundant harvests, good health, and protection from illness throughout the coming year.

Fire That Brings Health and Protection

It is believed that warming oneself by the Sainokami fire helps ward off sickness, making the ritual especially meaningful during the cold winter months. Local people often grill rice cakes (mochi) or dried squid (surume) over the sacred flames and take them home to share with family members.

According to tradition, eating food blessed by the Sainokami fire ensures household safety, good health, and peace for the entire year. This custom reflects the deep connection between daily life, faith, and seasonal change in rural Japan.

A Living Folk Tradition

Though simple in form, Toshinokami is a powerful expression of gratitude, renewal, and community bonding. Even today, this fire ritual continues to play an important role in preserving the cultural identity of the Aizu region, reminding people of the values of harmony with nature and respect for the gods.

For visitors to Fukushima, witnessing Toshinokami offers a rare opportunity to experience an authentic Japanese folk tradition that remains deeply rooted in local life.
