Fukushima Travel – Sannokura Highlands – Millions of Canola Flowers

High above the Aizu Basin in Kitakata City, Sannokura Highlands Flower Field offers one of the most breathtaking spring landscapes in Fukushima Prefecture. Spanning approximately 8 hectares — this vast flower field is transformed into a sea of yellow every May as 3.5 million nanohana (canola flowers) come into full bloom.

From mid to late May, visitors can experience a golden panorama that stretches across the slopes of a former ski resort, now creatively repurposed into a seasonal flower paradise. Thanks to its elevated location, Sannokura is also one of the best scenic viewpoints in the region, offering stunning views of the entire Aizu Valley — a perfect destination for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking peaceful Fukushima travel escapes.

Although the Nanohana Festival was officially held on May 24 and 25, photos taken on May 26 still captured the blossoms in their full glory. The bloom ends quickly, as the flowers are cut down shortly after to make way for planting sunflowers, which bloom vibrantly in summer.

🚗 How to Get There – and Why You Shouldn’t Miss It

Due to its remote location, access to Sannokura Highlands from downtown Kitakata can be challenging without a car. We highly recommend booking a curated Fukushima tour with Deep Japan Tours for smooth transportation and deeper cultural insight into this hidden floral treasure.

Whether you’re chasing spring colors or planning ahead for summer’s sunflower fields, Sannokura Highlands is a must-visit for any Japan travel itinerary.
