Fukushima Travel – Soma Nomaoi, Samurai Horse Race

On May 25, the roar of hooves thundered across Hibarigahara Field in Minamisoma City, as the highlight of the legendary Soma Nomaoi (相馬野馬追) festival unfolded — the Kacchu Keiba (甲冑競馬), or armored horse racing.

Dressed in full samurai armor, fearless riders raced their horses at full speed across the grassland, banners flying and the crowd cheering. It was a breathtaking and dramatic display of bravery, skill, and tradition — a scene that looked exactly like a page torn from a Sengoku-era war chronicle.

The Soma Nomaoi festival, one of the most spectacular and historically rich events in Fukushima Prefecture, dates back over 1,000 years. Originally a military exercise conducted by the Soma samurai clan, it has evolved into a sacred and dynamic celebration of warrior culture and Shinto ritual.

Held just once a year, this extraordinary Japan travel experience is only available here in Fukushima, making it one of the country’s most exclusive and unforgettable cultural festivals.

The Kacchu Keiba is just one part of the Soma Nomaoi’s incredible lineup. Later in the day, the Goshinki Sodatsusen (御神旗争奪戦) — a fierce battle for sacred flags — adds even more excitement, as dozens of mounted warriors clash in a race of speed and strategy.

Due to limited public transportation in the region, we recommend booking with Deep Japan Tours for expert-guided access to this one-of-a-kind Fukushima tour.
