Fukushima Travel – Soma Nomaoi Samurai Parade

On May 25, the historic streets of Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture, were transformed into a vivid samurai pageant as the Soma Nomaoi (相馬野馬追) festival began with its traditional “Ogyoretsu” — a magnificent procession of armored horsemen, warriors, and shrine banners.

Starting at 9:30 AM, hundreds of participants clad in authentic Sengoku-period armor paraded solemnly through the city, waving family crests and chanting in rhythm, accompanied by the steady trot of decorated horses. The sight is nothing short of a living war chronicle — a Fukushima travel experience unlike anything else in Japan.

With over 1,000 years of history, Soma Nomaoi began as a military training ritual by the Soma clan, who ruled the region for generations. Today, it lives on as a sacred and spectacular event, drawing both locals and international visitors seeking a deeper connection to Japanese samurai heritage.

This Fukushima festival is held only once a year and can only be seen here in Minamisoma. The procession is just the beginning — leading to the intense Horse Race, Goshinki Sodatsusen (sacred flag competition) and wild horse capturing rites that follow over the weekend.

If you’re planning a Japan tour that reaches beyond the usual tourist paths, Soma Nomaoi offers an immersive journey into Japan’s warrior spirit. And because public transport in the region is limited, we recommend joining a guided trip with Deep Japan Tours for seamless access and expert insights into this unique cultural treasure.
