Fukushima Travel – The Majestic Ginkgo Tree in Aizuwakamatsu

On November 14, 2025, we were captivated by the breathtaking beauty of the giant ginkgo tree, known as Akai no Oichou, located in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture.

Estimated to be 650 years old, this magnificent tree stands on the site of the former residence of Akai Inaba, a vassal of the Aizu Ashina clan. With a trunk circumference of 23 meters, a height of 60 meters, and a branch spread of 30 meters, it truly is a natural marvel.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Mount Bandai, Akai no Oichou showcases a vibrant fall display that leaves visitors in awe. As the leaves transition from vibrant greens to dazzling shades of yellow and gold, the scenery transforms into an enchanting autumn wonderland. The gentle rustle of leaves in the cool autumn breeze, combined with the majestic mountain views, creates a serene atmosphere perfect for a memorable outing.

This remarkable tree is not only a sight to behold, but it also holds great botanical significance. Its lower branches feature numerous large, drooping, breast-like galls, earning it the local nickname “Oppai Ichou” among residents. Such unique characteristics make Akai no Oichou an important study subject in plant physiology.

Aizuwakamatsu, rich in history and culture, offers amazing opportunities for exploration. Visitors can enjoy traditional architecture, local cuisine, and the warm hospitality of the region. The beauty of Akai no Oichou is just one of many treasures this city holds during the autumn season.
