Fukushima Travel – Waraji Matsuri – Japan’s Giant Straw Sandal Festival

Celebrate summer in Fukushima with the vibrant and electrifying Fukushima Waraji Matsuri, held in early August around August 1, centered on the iconic giant waraji straw sandal. This one-of-a-kind festival transforms Fukushima City into a stage of color, rhythm, and heartfelt tradition.

🌟 Festival Highlights

Japan’s Largest Straw Waraji

A 12-meter-long, 2-ton straw sandal leads the parade through central streets. Crafted as an offering to Haguro Shrine on Mt. Shinobu, it symbolizes strong legs and safe travel.

Waraji Ondo Dance & Live Music

Dozens of groups dance in unison to live taiko drumming, flutes, and upbeat songs, maintaining a festive rhythm throughout the evening.

Dancing Soda Night & Community Participation

On the second night, a modern “Dancing Soda Night” features pop and hip-hop beats, with community groups in vibrant costumes creating an energetic contrast to traditional rhythms.

📅 When & Where

Dates: Early August — traditionally held from August 1 to 3, with main events on the first weekend.

Venue: Shinobu Street (Route 13) and Ekimae Street, Fukushima City — just a 5-minute walk from JR Fukushima Station.

🛤 Festival Origins & Significance

Though officially launched in 1970, the festival draws inspiration from the centuries-old Akatsuki-mairi (Mt. Shinobu Dawn Procession), where a giant waraji was traditionally offered to Haguro Shrine for health and protection. The modern festival—one of the Tohoku Six Soul Festivals—carries forward this link as a symbol of resilience and regional pride.
