Fukushima Travel – Waterfall Purification at Nakano Fudoson

On February 28, the annual Toshimatsuri (Year Festival) began at Nakano Fudoson in Iizaka, Fukushima. One of the festival’s most powerful and visually striking rituals—the traditional waterfall purification (misogi)—was solemnly performed beneath the sacred Fudo Falls.

Despite unusually warm weather for late February, 43 practitioners ranging in age from 8 to 65, including eight women from inside and outside Fukushima Prefecture, took part in the ceremony.

A 9-Meter Waterfall and the Spirit of Purification

Dressed in white robes symbolizing spiritual purity, participants stood beneath a waterfall plunging from approximately nine meters above. The icy cascade struck their bodies as they formed a circle, splashing water over one another before stepping forward in pairs to pray with intense concentration.

This ritual, once known as O-mizutori (“water drawing”), is believed to grant wishes when prayers are offered with a pure and focused heart. The physical endurance required reflects a deeper spiritual cleansing—washing away impurities of both body and mind to welcome the new year with clarity.

The Legend Behind the Ritual

Before entering the waterfall, practitioners dedicated a sacred Bonten offering. This tradition originates from the temple’s legend that a serow (a Japanese mountain goat-antelope) carrying a Bonten guided the founder to this holy site. Such stories form the spiritual foundation of Nakano Fudoson, long affectionately known as “Nakano no Ofudo-sama.”

Nakano Fudoson is also revered as one of the “Three Great Fudo” temples of Japan and has drawn worshippers for centuries seeking protection, purification, and strength.

A Living Tradition in Fukushima

The Toshimatsuri Waterfall Ritual is more than a dramatic winter event—it is a living expression of Fukushima’s enduring spiritual culture. Standing beneath the roaring water, participants entrust their prayers to the sacred falls, beginning the year with renewed determination and gratitude.
