A Spectacular Summer Festival in Northern Japan

Summer in Japan is the season of spectacular festivals, and one of the most impressive can be found in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture.

 

The Hachinohe Sansha Taisai Festival is one of northern Japan’s great summer festivals. With approximately 300 years of history, the festival combines solemn shrine processions with enormous, brilliantly decorated festival floats.

 

In 2016, the festival’s float tradition was registered as part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage listing of the Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals in Japan.
